Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, is a well-known chemical compound that naturally occurs as a white solid crystalline. However, people often use it in the form of fine powder. This compound comes with a salty and alkaline taste.

Baking soda has been used since ancient time. For instance, the people of Ancient Egypt have used this compound to make a paint they used for creating hieroglyphs.

About 170 years ago, Austin Church and John Dwight, two popular New York-based bakers have started a factory that was focused on making baking soda. This was the first factory of this kind in the United States.

Today, people use baking soda for many different things including cleaning, cooking, making deodorants, toothpaste, shampoos and even for treatments and healing purposes.

When it comes to medicinal use, we should mention that:

– Creating a mixture that consists of water and baking soda makes a very efficient antacid

– Baking soda can aid the body’s effort to get rid of splinters

– A smooth paste based on baking soda and water can cure allergic reactions caused by sumac/poison ivy

– Baking soda significantly increases pH levels

– People dealing with kidney failure are often healed with sodium bicarbonate. This helps them slow down and stop the progress of this serious disease.

So, sodium bicarbonate is very important for the health. The kidneys and pancreas are the organs that create bicarbonate to keep the kidneys safe and optimize their work. If these two organs are not working properly, the production of bicarbonate is affected too.

As a result of that, there is an accumulation of acid and the body has problems neutralizing the effects of this accumulation. Next, the body witnesses the deterioration of cells and the sufferers needs immediate treatment that will help them eliminate excess acid and get more oxygen, nutrients, and water.

How can baking soda help you repair your kidneys?

In case you are at risk of witnessing the emergence of kidney disease, you should follow these steps:

On day one, take half a teaspoon of baking soda and dissolve it right under your tongue. On day two, take half a teaspoon of baking and half a teaspoon of salt. Mix them in 1.5 liters of fresh water. Drink this mixture on a daily basis for 3 days in a row.

Patients dealing with kidney disease often experience low levels of bicarbonate. This is a medical condition known as metabolic acidosis.
Dr. Thomas P. Kennedy points out that using a sodium bicarbonate solution as saline infusion before the use of the radiocontrast material is an excellent idea because it will lower the frequency of nephropathy.

According to some statistics, over three million people in the United Kingdom are dealing with chronic kidney disease. More than 1% of them need renal replacement therapy – a therapy that includes dialysis and in some cases a kidney transplant. Taking care of these patients is quite costly – about $45.000 a year.

A scientific study carried out at the famous Whitechapel hospital in London was the world’s first controlled test in a clinical environment. The team of experts involved in this process has confirmed that sodium bicarbonate can radically slow down the progression and symptoms of kidney disease.

According to Magdi Yaqoob, a professor of Renal Medicine and the leader of this study, the results were incredible. They never thought that a common and simple compound like baking soda/sodium bicarbonate can be so effective in cases like this.

They have used the help of 134 test patients that were dealing with advanced metabolic acidosis and kidney disease. A small group of them have taken a tablet that included a relatively small amount of baking soda. They did this for one year on a daily basis.

The kidney performance of these selected patients was declining at a normal rate and they have significantly reduced their chances to practice dialysis. The selected group had a 70% slower decline in overall health compared to the others.

One patient out of ten from this group has a rapid progression of the disease. On the other hand, almost 5 out of 10 patients from the group that didn’t receive sodium bicarbonate have experienced this unpleasant problem.

According to professor Magdi Yaqoob, with the help of this scientific study, we can conclude that sodium bicarbonate can deliver many benefits to those suffering from kidney failure. Of course, these people must take the right dose of baking soda at the right time.

It turns out that baking soda is able to prevent kidney inflammation because of the specific chemical reaction it causes in the body. With its help, people can reduce ammonia production in their kidneys.

There is no doubt that this is an inexpensive and very simple strategy that is good for the patients. Baking soda also helps them get the most from the nutrients they take and can improve the overall quality of life in patients. Since baking soda is not considered a drug, it took a while before the first scientific study was made.

According to the Whitechapel Hospital’s research team, the results are promising, but they will need to conduct additional testing and they should definitely include a placebo group. In this way, it would be much easier to evaluate the efficiency of sodium bicarbonate when used as a treatment for people suffering from metabolic acidosis and kidney failure.
